In Greek mythology, the Nereids are the 50 daughters of Nereus and Doris. They are nymphs of the sea who protect shipwrecked people. They live at the bottom of the sea and are companions of the god Poseidon. In many ancient Greek desciptions the Nereids ride on the backs of dolphins or hippocampuses. Amphitrite became the wife of Poseidon, god of the sea, which further connected the Nereids to the oceanic empire.
